AP Literature

Why read, discuss, and write about literary art? What world-work are we doing when we are doing the work of literary interpretation? Our thesis, which we will test throughout our course, is that among the many things we do when we interpret literary art is increase the potential for freedom in our individual lives, in our communities, and in our classrooms. That is to say, when we create spaces for developing interpretive positions and reflecting on how and why we are taking those positions, we develop at the same time and in the same space, as the same space, political agency and the capacity for action. Yet another way of saying this: Reading literature is an act of insurgency, a step into revolution, a way of creating change.
